--Trip to Chama, NM - August 2004--

Keith and I had the good fortune to visit Chama, NM (near the Colorado border) and ride the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad (www.cumbresandtoltec.com)  We highly recommend it to anyone who loves nature and the great outdoors, the beautiful mountains and scenery, and for those who love to take photos.  The views were breathtaking. Our favorite vista was the Toltec Gorge - VERY impressive (we passed by it so quickly and were in awe, we didn't get any photos, I know, duh!)

We also got a chance to briefly visit the Rio Grande Gorge (between Tres Piedras and Taos, NM) and hope to go back in the future and spend more time exploring that scenery in one of the four national parks near the gorge.

(Text taken from the Cumbres and Toltec website)--The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is America's most authentic steam railroad, just as it was for a century, from the coal tipple to the conductor's smile. Twisting and turning through the beautiful San Juan Mountains on tracks that tamed the West, you'll cross the Colorado-New Mexico border eleven times. Count them as you look down from Windy Point, up at the spires of Phantom Curve, or into the depths of Toltec Gorge.

The train ride started in Chama, NM. This is the train depot.

Water tank where the train used to stop in the olden days to get more water to make the steam - we saw numerous water tanks along the ride.

This is the "fire truck" (on the rails) that follows the passenger train in case of an unexpected fire - he kept his distance of about 1/4 mile behind us, however we would see him often on a turn.

There were two tunnels during the ride, here is one of them.

The train ride ended in Antonito, CO. This is the train depot.
